5 Qualities Ministry Leaders Need to Flourish
Oct 04, 2024

We are called to follow Jesus and walk in a manner worthy of the calling.

Over the last four years, we have met and spoken with more pastors, missionaries, and ministry leaders than we ever had in our lifetime. We’ve encountered people on the verge of burnout, those who are burned out completely, and many who are thriving with burnout prevention habits.

Regardless of their busyness, financial status, or the extent of their responsibilities, we've observed a set of shared qualities among those who are co-laboring with Christ.

While this list is not exhaustive, we have noticed the abundant living attitudes in those who keep these qualities at the forefront of their lives:

Devotion to Family

They protect their family time. They keep set days off and honor them. They make time to be alone with their spouse and separate time to be together with their families. They lead their children in discipleship and maintain relationships with their adult children, where their families continue to glorify God.

Tenacity

They cling to the Lord and His goals, disregarding temporary circumstances and holding fast to the eternal rewards that await them. Their attitudes are shaped by an eternal perspective, not by the challenges they face.

Obedience

They follow Jesus and His Word in life, family, and ministry.

Faithfulness

They persevere through adversity, never giving up but focusing on Jesus. They understand that their strength comes from Christ alone, and they remain loyal and steadfast in their calling, regardless of the obstacles they encounter.

Great Time Management

Those who aren’t burning out are managing their time well, taking time to rest and prioritize their families. They ask for help and build teams to come alongside them so they don’t sacrifice their walk with the Lord or their families for the sake of their ministry calling.

We are called to follow Jesus and walk in a manner worthy of the calling. While we endure to the end, we must be careful not to think we can live this life to our own strength. We can cultivate our gifts, self-assess, and create good habits so we can represent the Lord well to a lost and dying world.

Let’s be thankful for what we can do, knowing it’s truly God who gives us the grace to do anything good at all.

Hearing the worst of everyone’s problems and circumstances can bring on an incapacitating exhaustion, making it difficult to walk out their calling.
