Why Your Pastor Needs Your Prayers More Than You Think
February 7, 2025

Pastors are not only called to teach and guide but also to live as examples.

Pastors are often the unsung heroes of the church, tirelessly serving their congregations and guiding their flocks through life’s spiritual and practical challenges. But have you ever stopped to think about the pressures they face? From counseling individuals in crisis to preparing weekly sermons, pastors carry significant emotional, spiritual, and physical burdens. Yet, many of us forget one simple but powerful thing we can do to support them: pray.

In this first post of our series, we’ll explore why pastors need your prayers and how you can begin interceding for them. We’ll also look at what Scripture says about the role of pastors and the importance of lifting them up in prayer.

The Weight of Leadership

The Bible gives us a glimpse into the responsibilities of spiritual leaders. In 1 Peter 5:2-3, pastors are instructed to: “Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.”

This high calling comes with immense responsibility. Pastors are not only called to teach and guide but also to live as examples. The weight of this role can lead to exhaustion, discouragement, and even burnout if they are not supported. Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we can come alongside our pastors and help shoulder this burden.

The Enemy’s Target

Pastors are on the frontlines of spiritual warfare. As leaders of God’s church, they are often the target of attacks from the enemy. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

The enemy’s goal is to discourage and discredit spiritual leaders, knowing that their failure can impact an entire congregation. This is why it’s critical to pray for their spiritual protection and strength.

Praying for Your Pastor

Here are some practical ways to make praying for your pastor a regular part of your life:

  1. Set a Daily Reminder: Use your phone or calendar to set a daily alarm to pray for your pastor. Even a quick one-minute prayer can make a difference.
  2. Prayer Cards: Write down specific prayer points for your pastor and place them where you’ll see them often (e.g., your fridge or Bible).
  3. Weekly Focus: Assign a different area of prayer for each day of the week. For example:
  • Monday: Wisdom in decision-making
  • Tuesday: Protection from burnout
  • Wednesday: Strength for their family
  • Thursday: Boldness in preaching
  • Friday: Encouragement and renewal

A Sample Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of our pastor. We pray for Your hand of protection over their life. Give them wisdom and discernment as they lead and guide our church. Strengthen them spiritually, emotionally, and physically, and renew their energy daily. Guard them against the attacks of the enemy and fill them with Your joy and peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Family Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think it’s important to pray for pastors?
  2. What challenges do you think pastors face that others may not?
  3. How can we, as a family, make praying for our pastor a regular habit?
  4. Can you think of ways to encourage your pastor this week besides prayer?

Encourage your family to brainstorm ideas for praying together, such as creating a prayer jar or starting a family prayer journal.
